"I Googled my own business and I can't find it." This is one of the most frustrating experiences a business owner can have — especially when you know your competitors are appearing above you. The good news is that there are only a handful of reasons this happens, and every one of them is fixable.
Work through this list from top to bottom. The earlier items are more common and more impactful.
Reason 1: Your Google Business Profile Is Unverified
Fix: 5 minutesAn unverified GBP is invisible to Google. You may have created a profile and filled it in, but if you never completed the verification step, it simply doesn't appear in search results or Maps.
How to check: Go to business.google.com and look at your profile. If you see a "Verify now" button, that's your issue.
How to fix: Request verification via postcard, phone, or video. Once the code arrives, enter it in your GBP dashboard. Your listing becomes active within 24–72 hours.
Reason 2: Your GBP Is Suspended
Fix: 1–2 weeksGoogle suspends profiles for policy violations — often without warning. Common causes include: keyword stuffing in your business name, a fake or misleading address, operating in a prohibited category, or having too many duplicate listings.
How to check: In your GBP dashboard, your status will show "Suspended." You may also receive an email from Google.
How to fix: Identify the violation, correct it, then submit a reinstatement request through the GBP Help Centre. This process takes 1–2 weeks. Do not create a new listing while waiting — it will be suspended too.
Reason 3: You Don't Have a Website (or Yours Is Low Quality)
Fix: 5–10 days with LocalPageHQGoogle's local ranking algorithm uses your website as a trust signal. A GBP linked to a fast, well-structured website ranks significantly higher than one with no website or a poor-quality one.
Specifically, your website needs: a page speed score above 70 on mobile, HTTPS, your business name/address/phone in the footer matching your GBP exactly, and local keyword relevance in your page titles.
How to fix: If you don't have a website, get one built. If you do, run it through PageSpeed Insights and check it meets the criteria above. See our full website checklist.
Reason 4: Inconsistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) Across the Web
Fix: 1–2 hoursIf your business name is "Joe's Plumbing Ltd" on your website but "Joes Plumbing" on Yelp and "Joe's Plumbing Services" on Facebook, Google sees three different entities. This inconsistency undermines trust and suppresses your ranking.
How to fix: Search for your business on Google Maps, Yelp, Facebook, Yellow Pages, Bing Places, and Apple Maps. Make your name, address (including abbreviations — "St" vs "Street"), and phone number identical on every platform.
Reason 5: You Have No Google Reviews (or Very Few)
Fix: Ongoing — start todayReviews are the single strongest ranking factor for the Google map pack. A business with 3 reviews will almost never outrank a competitor with 45, even if everything else is equal.
How to fix: Get your review link from your GBP dashboard and start asking every satisfied customer. Send a follow-up text after each completed job. Read our GBP optimisation guide for a system that generates consistent reviews without being pushy.
Reason 6: Your Business Category Is Too Broad or Wrong
Fix: 2 minutesIf you selected "Contractor" when you should have selected "Plumber," you're not appearing for plumber searches. Your primary category needs to match exactly what your customers search for.
How to fix: Go to GBP → Edit profile → Business category. Search for the most specific category that applies to you. Look at what categories your top-ranking competitors are using — that's your benchmark.
Reason 7: Your Website Has a "No Index" Tag
Fix: 5 minutesThis is rarer but catastrophic when it happens. A noindex meta tag in your website's HTML tells Google explicitly not to include your pages in search results. It's often added accidentally by developers during testing and never removed.
How to check: Go to your website, right-click, and select "View Page Source." Press Ctrl+F and search for "noindex." If you find it, that's your problem.
How to fix: Remove the <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> tag from your HTML, or if you're on WordPress, go to Settings → Reading and uncheck "Discourage search engines from indexing this site."
Reason 8: You're Searching Too Far From Your Location
Fix: Change how you testThis one catches a lot of business owners out. Google's local results are heavily influenced by the searcher's physical location. If you're sitting in your office in one part of town and searching for your business category, you might not appear — but customers on the other side of town might see you just fine.
How to check properly: Use the free tool Google Search Console to see which queries are showing your site in results. Or use BrightLocal's Local Search Results Checker to simulate searches from specific postcode/ZIP locations.
If you're invisible from all locations, the issue is one of the above reasons. If you appear in some areas but not others, it's likely a proximity/competition issue — more reviews and content will expand your reach.
Still Can't Find Your Business on Google?
If you've worked through all eight reasons and still can't identify the problem, there are two more things to check:
- New listing: If your GBP was recently created or just verified, give it 2–4 weeks to appear. New listings take time to be indexed.
- Highly competitive market: If you're in a dense urban area with dozens of competitors, even a well-optimised profile may not crack the top three immediately. This requires a longer-term strategy of consistent reviews, content, and backlinks.
The businesses that consistently appear at the top of Google aren't luckier than you — they've simply done the fundamentals better and more consistently. Every item on this list is something you can fix.
