Most local business websites have a fundamental problem: they exist, but they don't perform. They're online but not found. They look acceptable on desktop but break on mobile. They have a contact form that nobody fills in.

This checklist covers the 12 elements that separate a website that actively wins you customers from one that simply takes up a URL. Use it to audit your current site or to plan a new one.

The 12-Point Local Business Website Checklist

1. Mobile-First Design

Over 60% of local searches happen on a smartphone. Your site must look and work perfectly on a 375px screen — not just on desktop. Test it right now: pull up your website on your phone. Is the text readable without zooming? Are the buttons easy to tap? Does the layout break or overflow? If yes, this is your most urgent fix.

2. Page Speed Under 3 Seconds

Google uses page speed as a direct ranking factor. More importantly, 53% of mobile users abandon a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Run your site through PageSpeed Insights (free from Google). A score below 70 on mobile is a red flag. Common culprits: unoptimised images, too many plugins, cheap shared hosting.

3. Clear, Specific Headline

Within 5 seconds of landing on your page, a visitor should know exactly what you do, who you serve, and where you operate. "Welcome to our website" is not a headline. "Certified Electricians Serving Dallas — Same-Day Service Available" is. Your headline is the most important text on your page. Treat it that way.

4. One Prominent Call-to-Action

Every page needs a single, obvious next step: Call Now, Book an Appointment, Get a Free Quote, Order Online. Don't give visitors five options — decision fatigue leads to no decision. Put your primary CTA in the header (visible on every screen), in the hero section, and again at the bottom of the page.

5. Clickable Phone Number

On mobile, your phone number should be a tel: link that opens the phone dialer with one tap. A surprising number of local business sites display their number as plain text — meaning a mobile visitor has to copy it, switch apps, and paste it. That friction costs you calls. This is a 30-second fix with enormous impact.

6. Social Proof (Reviews and Testimonials)

92% of consumers read online reviews before choosing a local business. Your website should show your best testimonials prominently — not buried on a separate "Testimonials" page. Ideally, embed your Google or Yelp reviews directly so they're verified and credible. Even 3–5 specific testimonials ("Mike fixed our boiler in 2 hours on a Sunday") convert far better than generic praise.

7. SSL Certificate (HTTPS)

If your site URL starts with http:// instead of https://, browsers display a "Not Secure" warning to visitors. Google also penalises unencrypted sites in search rankings. SSL certificates are free via Let's Encrypt and included with most quality hosting plans. There's no excuse to run a site without one in 2026.

8. Title Tag and Meta Description Optimised for Local Search

Your page title (the text that appears in Google search results) should include your main service and your city. Example: "Plumber in Austin, TX | Fast Response | Joe's Plumbing". Your meta description should be a compelling 155-character summary that makes someone want to click. These two elements are free to set and have a direct impact on your click-through rate in search results.

9. Google Maps Embed and Address

If customers can come to you, or if you serve a specific area, include an embedded Google Map and your full address. This reinforces your local relevance to Google and makes it trivially easy for customers to find you. It also helps your Google Business Profile rank higher in the local map pack.

10. Clear Services List With Prices (or Price Range)

People research before they call. If your website doesn't tell them what you offer and roughly what it costs, they'll find a competitor who does. You don't need exact prices — a range ("from $150") or a starting price is enough to qualify visitors and stop you wasting time on calls that go nowhere.

11. Working Contact Form (Tested Monthly)

Contact forms break silently. A plugin update, a server configuration change, or a full email inbox can stop form submissions from reaching you — and you won't know until a customer tells you they tried to contact you twice and heard nothing. Test your form every month. Send yourself a test message and confirm it arrives in your inbox. This is one of the most common (and costly) website failures we see.

12. LocalBusiness Schema Markup (JSON-LD)

Schema markup is structured data that tells Google exactly what your business is, where it is, what it does, and what its hours are. Businesses with schema markup often appear with rich results in Google — showing star ratings, opening hours, and price ranges directly in the search result. It's invisible to visitors but powerful for rankings. Most DIY sites don't have it. It should be in every professionally built local business website.

How Did Your Site Score?

Score What It Means What to Do
10–12 ✓ Your site is well-optimised Focus on content and backlinks next
7–9 ✓ Good foundation, gaps to fill Prioritise the missing items above
4–6 ✓ Significant issues hurting performance Consider a professional redesign
0–3 ✓ The site is costing you customers A rebuild is likely more cost-effective than patching
