Most local businesses focus on getting more traffic. But if 500 people visit your site a month and 5 get in touch, doubling your traffic to 1,000 gets you 10 enquiries — while doubling your conversion rate to 2% gets you the same 10, from the visitors you already have, for free.
Here are the levers, in order of impact.
1. One Clear Call to Action — Everywhere
Decide the single most valuable action — usually "Call now" or "Get a free quote" — and make it unmissable:
- Above the fold on the homepage, in a colour used nowhere else
- In the header (a sticky button that follows the visitor as they scroll)
- After each proof section — reviews, before/afters, your guarantee
- At the foot of every page — repeat the promise and the button
Give secondary actions (email, form, social) less visual weight. If the visitor has to hunt for the button, you're leaking enquiries.
2. Shorter Forms
Every extra field lowers completion. For a standard enquiry, ask for three things only: name, contact, and a short message. You can get the rest on the call.
For a higher-value offer (a free site audit, a quote visit), a two-step form works better: step one asks for almost nothing, step two collects detail after the visitor has committed by clicking. The psychological "foot in the door" lifts submissions noticeably.
3. Make Contacting You Effortless on Mobile
- Phone number as a
tel:link in the sticky header - A click-to-WhatsApp or click-to-text button if that suits your customers
- A short form that's usable one-handed, with the right keyboard for each field (number pad for phone)
For local service businesses, calls are often more than half of all conversions — remove every tap you can.
4. Reduce Risk at the Point of Decision
The moment before someone contacts you is peak doubt. A single line next to your CTA can lift response:
- "No call-out fee."
- "We reply within one business hour."
- "Free quote — no obligation, no pushy follow-up."
- "30-day money-back guarantee."
Put your single best review right beside the form for the same reason.
5. Give a Reason to Act Now (Honestly)
Genuine urgency helps; fake countdown timers hurt. Real reasons: "We take on 3 new jobs a week", "Booking into [next month] now", "This month's diary is filling up". Only say it if it's true.
6. The Biggest Lever Isn't on the Website: Follow-Up Speed
Set this up once:
- Form submissions go to a phone you check, not just an inbox — email + text notification.
- An automatic acknowledgement fires immediately: "Thanks [Name], we've got your message and will call you within [X]." This buys you time and stops them shopping around.
- Have a default first response ready so replying takes 30 seconds, not a considered paragraph.
- If you use a CRM, feed leads straight into it and assign an owner.
7. Optional Extras — Only If You'll Use Them
- Exit-intent popup — a genuine offer shown when someone moves to leave can recover a slice of abandoning visitors. Use once, tastefully, or not at all.
- Live chat — only if it's actually staffed. An unanswered chat widget is worse than none.
- A calculator or quiz — "estimate your job cost" tools engage visitors and capture details, if your service suits one.
Measure It
Track leads, calls, and conversion rate monthly (see our metrics guide). Change one thing at a time — CTA wording, form length, the reassurance line — and watch what moves.
Built to Convert
Every LocalPageHQ site is built around lead generation — one clear CTA repeated, a short tested form, click-to-call on mobile, reassurance next to the button, and form notifications set up so you hear about enquiries immediately.
