Full disclosure: we build websites for a living, so we have a side in this. We'll try to be fair anyway, because AI website builders have got good enough that pretending otherwise would be silly — and for some businesses they're genuinely the right call.
Here's the honest version.
What AI Builders Do Well Now
Speed and cost
Prompt to published in under an hour, for the price of a monthly subscription. For a business that just needs a presence, fast and cheap, that's hard to beat.
A decent-looking starting point
Modern AI builders produce clean, mobile-friendly layouts with placeholder copy and images that are a solid 7/10 out of the box — well past what a non-designer would manage alone.
The basics handled
Responsive design, HTTPS, a contact form, basic meta tags — most builders do these automatically now.
Easy to change yourself
Editing text, swapping a photo, updating hours — you can do it in the browser without calling anyone.
Where They Still Fall Short
Strategy — the questions AI doesn't ask
An AI builder gives you what you asked for. It won't push back on "we do everything for everyone", won't work out which of your services actually drives revenue, and won't structure the site around getting calls rather than looking nice.
Real local SEO
Auto-generated meta tags aren't a local SEO strategy. Proper title tags per page, LocalBusiness schema, service-area pages that don't read as doorway spam, NAP consistency, internal linking — this is where AI builders "break hard", in the words of the people who make them.
Genuinely bespoke copy and photos
AI copy reads like AI copy — generic, hedge-y, adjective-heavy. It doesn't know that you're the only firm in town that does emergency callouts, or that your before/after photos are your strongest sales tool. Someone has to bring that.
Anything beyond ~15–20 pages or a custom flow
Multi-location structures, a real booking system, custom integrations, e-commerce past the basics — AI builders get fragile fast.
Lock-in
Most AI builders, like most builders, don't let you export and move the site. You're renting.
A Decision Guide
- You need a presence, not a lead source, and budget is tight: AI builder. Get online this week.
- Your customers mostly find you by word of mouth and just want to check you're real: AI builder is fine.
- You compete for local search traffic and the website is meant to bring in work: hire someone, or use a service that includes the SEO groundwork.
- You serve multiple towns, take bookings, or need it to scale: hire someone.
- You value your time more than the saving: hire someone — the DIY hours add up faster than people expect.
The Hybrid Path
Plenty of businesses start on an AI builder to get online now, then move to a professionally built site once the business justifies it. That's a reasonable sequence — just budget for the switch, and don't build a huge site on a platform you'll have to abandon.
Where We Fit
LocalPageHQ is the "hire someone" option, priced for local businesses: we do the strategy conversation, write real copy from your input, build the technical SEO in (schema, titles, speed, service-area pages), and you own the site and domain with no lock-in. Roughly the cost of a couple of years of an AI builder subscription, done properly once.
We'll build a free preview of your site using your real business details — compare it against whatever an AI builder gives you.
